*About the artist
YJ (Vyjayanthi) is a Bay Area based multidisciplinary artist and educator specializing in batik, pastels, and urban sketching. With over 15 years of experience in the Malay and Japanese wax-resist traditions, she brings both technical skill and a mindful approach to her teaching. Her work reimagines batik as more than textile; it’s a practice of presence, layering color and wax to explore memory, migration, and heritage. YJ has led community batik events across the Bay Area and taught at Kala Art Institute, Richmond Art Center, and as visiting faculty at NIFT and other universities. In her workshops, YJ invites participants to slow down, connect with the materials, and discover the meditative beauty of batik, leaving not just with a finished artwork, but with an experience of creative stillness.
