Kalamkari’ dates back several centuries to when this form of hand-painting first adorned fabrics with illustrations of mythological characters and stories. The name comes from ‘Kalam’ (pen), since the tool is carved from bamboo or tree bark and wrapped with a piece of cloth that absorbs dye and acts like an ink pad! To this day, the beloved art form of India is practiced by artisans who use dyes extracted from plants and minerals to produce magnificent colors and intricate designs through 20-odd elaborate steps!
